Chapter Eleven: The Truth Lies not Just in Faith but in Logical Reason as Well

By John Christenson

By their fruits you will know them. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? Just so, every good tree bears good fruit, and a rotten tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a rotten tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. So by their fruits you will know them.
Matthew 7: 16-20

The internet is abuzz these days with talk about the impending fate of Medjugorje. Catholic news sources, blogs and forums alike are especially abuzz this past week or so concerning the many recent developments surrounding this ongoing phenomenon. Why all the buzz? Well, for the most part this began only a few months ago with surprisingly favorable mention of Medjugorje by then visiting Christopher Cardinal Schonborn from Austria who spent several weeks in Medjugorje last December and early January. But with more recent developments of late such internet chatter has grown leaps and bounds. For most following the Medjugorje events we can probably all agree that pending decisions of some nature are certainly in the air.

Shortly after the Cardinals visit, and despite Bishop Ratko Peric’s decision years earlier to condemn the purported Medjugorje apparitions ruling them to be false out of what appears to be sheer personal and biased opinion a new commission was appointed by the Vatican to overlook and investigate the purported Medjugorje apparitions. No doubt this was somewhat of a cataclysmic surprise to Medjugorje opponents though they would unlikely ever admit it. But how could it not be? The Bishops sole ruling was their big ace in the hole. This favorable move by the Vatican came despite the adamant refusal by die hard Medjugorje opponents to accept it and embrace it. Mere detractors who have been clearly piggy backing off the Bishop’s personal opinion for years, insisting that because of his seemingly unchangeable stance the verdict was indeed already in long ago and simply could not be argued…

Yet, just as they sounded the trumpets from their pedestals that the door was now shut, locked & chained, and the key thrown into the deep sea of deception, suddenly the door in what appeared to be defying all odds miraculously flew wide open again and Medjugorje opponents had to now quickly go to work to try to conjure up some other means to debunk the purported apparitions. Well, truth be told, there simply is no other ace in the hole. So, with no other means to debunk the Medjugorje happenings they’ve not given up on the Bishops long time stance despite these new developments. Could it be Pride? O’ but how would I look in front of all my peers after all these years of working tirelessly to debunk Medjugorje should the Vatican rule in it’s favor?

Bishop Peric had already spoken out against Medjugorje many years earlier claiming it to be nothing more than an elaborate hoax at best. These die hard Medjugorje opponents today, regardless of the facts, are relentless in their ongoing mission to debunk the apparitions even going as far as to claim that anyone and everyone, including the good Cardinal himself who refuses to honor Bishop Peric’s decision is in fact in direct disobedience to the Church.

Well, now we need to take a step back for a moment and look at the bigger picture here in order to fully understand what exactly is going on before anyone quickly buys into the continual rhetoric of any Medjugorje opponent. It has been a long time argument that if anyone pays any heed at all to the Medjugorje message or even leans slightly towards any kind of personal belief that Our Lady is truly appearing in this little Bosnian town, that this is direct disobedience to the Majesterium of the Catholic Church. Why? Because several years ago, echoing the sentiments of his predecessor Bishop Pavao Zanic, the current Bishop Peric concluded that the purported apparitions in Medjugorje, a town that falls under his Diocesan jurisdiction of Mostar were false and further went on to argue that they were the elaborate invention of the Franciscans who oversee St. James Parish and many of the Catholic Parishes and institutions in the surrounding area. Well, anyone who knows anything about private revelation knows that the Bishop of the particular Diocese that oversees the Parish or location where the visionary or visionaries are purporting to be receiving heavenly revelations and/or apparitions generally has the authority to rule whether the purported private revelations are authentic or not. So the case was closed.

This has been the major fuel for Medjugorje opponents. Among an onslaught of twisted facts, half-truths, and even outright lies the one ace in the hole Medjugorje opponents did actually possess was the fact that the Bishop of Mostar himself was convinced that there was nothing spiritually phenomenal occurring in Medjugorje and that at least for a time seemed to have the power to discern and decide it’s fate. And thus, as far as those who stood by the Bishop were concerned the case was closed regardless of any evidence that clearly proved otherwise. The fruits did not matter. The miracles did not matter. The conversions did not matter. The Bishop had spoken and so the case was closed.

Yet truth be told, contrary to what Medjugorje opponents would love to have people believe, little known was the fact that the Vatican actually stepped into the picture as early as 2006 and removed the Bishops authority to rule on the purported apparitions... That’s right.. A higher authority ruled over the Bishops Mitre yet little is ever heard of this even in Catholic news circles today. The reason for the Vatican stepping in? Well, to begin with, because Medjugorje reaches far beyond the diocese of Mostar. Medjugorje envelops the entire Church. Medjugorje has become a world wide phenomenon embraced by countless of thousands of faithful Catholics, not to mention has spawned numerous conversions... But this is neither the only reason nor the main reason. Another reason may simply be because the Bishop clearly showed a sense of bias and narrow minded opinion towards the phenomenon right from the beginning.

The current Bishop of Mostar is a secular priest. The Franciscans who tend to the faithful flock around St. James Parish are not. They are of a religious order that has long had to deal with the unwarranted rivalry of their secular brethren and fellow diocesan confreres. The Diocese of Mostar was created 100 years almost to the day before the purported apparitions began. For at least the first 60 years under the Bishopric of two Franciscan Bishops the Franciscans steered the Diocese of Mostar. Today, the Diocese of Mostar is not under the influence of the Franciscans but is secular. In between all of this has been a sense of dissension between the two groups. A rivalry that has went on long before the apparitions began but has undoubtedly played a major role in the Bishops decision to renounce the apparitions.

What is important to note, and what clearly indicates to anyone who has ears and is attentive to what is truly going on, is that in overstepping the Bishops ruling and further creating a new commission to investigate Medjugorje, the Vatican informed the Bishop that he was no longer permitted to voice his personal opinion in an authoritative manner concerning the ongoing investigation. Medjugorje opponents have never been able to truly grasp this and accept the Vatican’s right to authority overriding the Bishops authority. Opponents generally tend to ignore such facts in their attempts to debunk Medjugorje.

"Dear children! Today I desire to thank you for all your sacrifices and for all your prayers. I am blessing you with my special motherly blessing. I invite you all to decide for God, so that from day to day you will discover His will in prayer. I desire, dear children, to call all of you to a full conversion so that joy will be in your hearts. I am happy that you are here today in such great numbers. Thank you for having responded to my call."
Medjugorje Message, June 25, 1990

So now today, once again our Catholic world is abuzz with new talk. New chatter that is clearly favorable towards the likeliness that most in the Vatican actually share a high regard and personal fondness for the fruits of conversion truly recognized as clearly coming out of Medjugorje despite Bishop Peric’s personal opinion. Cardinal Schonborn’s favorable expressions… Recent talk of the Diocese of Mostar being split in two, something never heard of before in Church history… It is possible that this move opens the door for favorable approval or at the very least, as suggested by one blogger, the possibility that Medjugorje in the not too distant future may receive shrine status, at the same time cushioning the sense of humility Bishop Peric would undoubtedly experience should he be reigning Bishop at the time of this announcement. Also, a commission panel, absent the Bishop of Mostar being put in place to investigate Medjugorje… And now the Papal Nuncio himself is heard speaking favorable about Medjugorje.. These are the current headlines buzzing through the Catholic internet world these days. What lies ahead concerning the fate of Medjugorje? Perhaps only a short time will tell…

Interesting term in itself by the way when you really stop and think about it… I mean, concerning the fate of Medjugorje.. It’s this question of fate that has the undivided attention of anyone and everyone who knows anything about Medjugorje these days. With all the recent Catholic media hype and internet chatter it’s become perhaps quite exciting for lack of a better term, especially for the many Medjugorje faithful who see all of these recent developments as a positive sign. O’ what exciting times indeed we are living in… To the very heart of the Medjugorje believer such favorable fate is truly inevitable. We just don’t know when. For those who truly believe that it is indeed Our Blessed Mother who has been appearing in Medjugorje the past almost 29 years it is also believed and accepted that Medjugorje’s fate lies in the hands of God and that it is through both faith and reason that we pretty much already know the outcome in our own hearts… That in time the Church will indeed embrace the Medjugorje message and recognize these purported apparitions by it’s fruits.. For those of us who are diehard Medjugorje fans it’s not a matter of if but when.

Well, in all fairness, it’s fate likewise also lies solely in the hands of God for those who are opponents of Medjugorje. Believing that the apparitions are false, Medjugorje opponents are also waiting for the Holy Spirit to guide the Church into making a decision. Only for them, the decision they await works in their favor, not ours. That is, that the Church will condemn the apparitions sending us die hard Medjugorje faithful fleeing in the other direction rather than approve them.. Not gonna happen. First of all, I am obedient to the Church above all… But then, it’s so easy to say this when I believe without a doubt in my mind and in my heart that the Vatican verdict in due time will be favorable.

So believers who look to the Medjugorje message each month are waiting for the Church to rule in favor, and opponents who share in the disbelief are eagerly awaiting Church condemnation… Well, hopefully we all believe and worship the same God, turn to the same Holy Mother for consolation in our Rosary prayers the good Catholics that we are, and hopefully we all obey the same Majesterium of the Church. Furthermore, hopefully we all recognize and believe that the Holy Spirit truly guides our Church in it’s discernment and decision making process. So now we are reaching an imminent sense of long awaited impending decisive word, either confirmation or condemnation soon to come out of Rome. There is an ever increasing and vibrantly active spirit among those who have a final say in whether or not the Church will condemn or approve Medjugorje..

Scripture tells us, we will know a tree by its fruits… For the Medjugorje opponent who casts stones at both the visionaries and their Franciscan spiritual directors, as well as at the Gospa who we truly believe to be Our Lady, the fruits are rotten. If only they could present truthful facts in their arguments against Medjugorje their claims might actually hold some weight. But after 28 years that hasn’t happened yet. Everything they’ve waged against Medjugorje has either been outright lies or at the very least twisted facts and half truths.. Well, naturally on the other hand the argument over the past 3 decades by the Medjugorje faithful who have held steadfast in faith and our resolve to trust that indeed this is Our Blessed Mother appearing, has been the countless number of messages, messages that contain no heresies mind you, and which together form a continual school of prayer teaching the Medjugorje faithful student to live the Gospel each and every day… So yet the major fruits are the numerous conversions that have come to fruition as a result of these apparitions.. Not just converts from other faiths coming into the Catholic Church but also new births of conversion within the hearts of many cradle Catholics who had fallen away from their baptismal faith, me being one of them… I join a countless multitude of faithful.

No doubt it’s still a wait and see process.. However to me it just seems a given that at the end of the day when all is said and done, it is the very fruit of Medjugorje that will undoubtedly be the deciding factor in all of this. Other elements such as discerning if the messages contain heresies certainly play a decisive role, no doubt… However, with all the theological arguments either for or against these events, the one vital contributing element that simply cannot be argued or debunked is ones personal testimony. No theologian can say, “Your conversion does not exist” when in fact it certainly does. Myself, I have been experiencing the fruits of conversion as a result of the Medjugorje message for six years now… I pray that my conversion continues and that I am continually drawn ever closer and closer to the Son who this Gospa brings to me each and everyday. The same Son who redeems each and every one of us repentant sinners who confess the name of Christ as Lord… And when you listen to the countless of millions who also share a personal testimony of conversion no theologian can argue this otherwise. That is just a fact.

Chapter Twelve: Peter, Feed My Sheep

By John Christenson

See Full Testimony Here

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” He then said to him a second time, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Amen, Amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he has said this, he said to him, “Follow me.” John 21: 15-19

How easy it is to find a sense of happiness.. to feel free when everything is going our way.. How easy the road when everything seems to flow smoothly and in our favor.. Without struggle, we carry no cross.. Without struggle, we need no help.. no support.. Without struggle we need no one.. we walk alone…

Jesus was trying to get Peter to see something in himself that is very important, something extremely intricate to his profession of faith.. That is, that it is not enough to simply boast “I am a Christian”, we must live it.. Jesus said, “Peter, feed my sheep.” This is a command.. What Jesus is telling us is that our call as Christians is to tend to the needs of others.. The greatest commandment is to “Love God and love others.” This is what defines our Christian faith.. By saying “yes” to that call….

When I arrived in Medjugorje this past September 8th, Feast of Our Lady’s birthday, I was carrying a very heavy cross… a burden that was oppressing me so much I was actually beginning to fall into despair.. and what weighed down this cross was a lot of confusion, anger and hurt… I’m not going to go into all of it right now.. This is not the place.. Besides, it doesn’t matter so much why I was carrying this heavy burden as much as it is important that I began to offer it up and accept not just the cross I was given to carry but also the help God desired to send my way.. the many Simon’s He places before me.. The past is the past and it is important to work through these hurts by offering it up, relying on the grace of God, and then simply let it go…

This particular passage from John’s Gospel helped me to realize that I cannot expect everything to always go my way, nor should I expect to never have to suffer… This passage also reminds me that it is important to both tend to the sheep in my life and to allow the sheep placed by God in my life to tend to me in my own needs as well, the sheep that I am…

This journey of conversion we share is about charity.. It is about love.. Love of God.. And love of neighbor.. It is about helping one another to climb the rugged mountain that stands before us.. Because at the very top of that mountain is Christ Jesus! And He awaits us with open arms! He has redeemed us and He desires more than anything that we accept that redemption and say “yes” to His invitation to climb Calvary to one day be with Him for all eternity..

Now Jesus calls us to love God and love our neighbors.. To be charitable.. It is easy to be charitable towards those who please us.. How easy is it to be charitable towards those who cast stones at us and make our journey difficult? One of the greatest stumbling blocks for us in our human nature is to love those who do not love us back.. I am to love my neighbor as myself.. What about when my neighbor annoys me? Or is mean to me? What if I find myself often arguing with my neighbor because we do not see eye to eye? How do I respond? What if my neighbor lashes out at me to hurt me? Well, I think we all know the answer to this.. “You have heard that it said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.” Matthew 5: 43,44 Perhaps sometimes it just seems easier said than done.. but it’s not impossible.. On November 7th, 1985, Our Lady said "Dear children! I am calling you to the love of neighbor and love toward the one from whom evil comes to you. In that way with love you will be able to discern the intentions of hearts. Pray and love, dear children! By love you are able to do even that which you think is impossible. Thank you for having responded to my call." While I was in Medjugorje, I witnessed this on occasions, as well as, receiving the grace myself to love those whom evil seemed to be coming from..

So, I began this recent pilgrimage to Medjugorje with a very heavy broken heart full of pain and full of confusion.. and even some resentment in my heart.. and as a result I was sitting on the very edge of despair.. But through the grace of God I received the greatest miracle of my entire life! That is, a very powerful and indescribable inner healing.. a healing of inner peace.. of feeling loved as a child of God, the infant that I very much still am … And I left Medjugorje feeling as though I was a new man.. a re-birth.. and I embrace this opportunity to begin anew with open arms, with all my heart, and all my mind, and with all my spirit.. It is my hopes that by the time I have finish sharing with you about this very special pilgrimage for as long as it takes to write it all out, I hope that I will have testified and witnessed to this tremendous outpouring of God’s graces in a way that helps others draw closer to the Risen Christ Who calls out to each of us just as I have been helped… As well, and please hang in there! Because I have lot’s of treats! Some, should hopefully prove to be really nice surprises for everyone… I hope you enjoy!

Chapter Thirteen: Preparing for The Beautiful Journey But With an Anxious Heart

By John Christenson

"Dear children! Thank you for dedicating all your hard work to God even now when He is testing you through the grapes you are picking. Be assured, dear children, that He loves you and, therefore, He tests you. You just always offer up all your burdens to God and do not be anxious. Thank you for having responded to my call."
Our Lady’s Medjugorje message, October 11, 1984

Both the evening before we departed for Medjugorje and the following morning while trying to get ready to leave were a challenge.. Naturally, when one is preparing for a journey, especially overseas things can get quite hectic and if we are not careful anxiety can often set in rather quickly.. And by nature, I am a panicky person to begin with who get’s stressed easily.. I’m getting much better at dealing with it though.. lol.. So on the eve of our departure as I did a last minute sweep of everything packed I suddenly realized that my passport was missing.. “Okay, no big deal.. It’s got to be around here somewhere.” I thought..

I was sure it was sitting in my desktop odds & ends tray right by my computer where I always keep it. Yet, it was not there. I began to search other places. The pockets of all my jackets, the sleeves of the suitcase I used on my last trip, my dresser drawers, under my bed. Nope.. Nothing! By the time I was searching the cupboards in the kitchen which was a ridiculous thought that it would even be there it finally occurred to me to say a prayer to St. Anthony asking him to help me.. and I remembered a little prayer the same sweet lady named Evelyn who made it possible for me to go to Medjugorje the first time had taught me last year, So I began, “Good St. Anthony, I need your help! Something's lost and can't be found, please St. Anthony, look around. Dear St. Anthony, I pray, bring it back without delay.”

No sooner had I said this and I was given a thought.. Call Louise and Curtis! It’s in Curtis’ car.. I had used Curtis’ car to visit in the States just weeks earlier so it made perfect sense that it would be there, even though the thought was far from my cluttered mind in my panic to prepare for this journey.. I picked up the phone and called over at my sisters.. Curtis answered the phone and honored my request to search his car.. He didn’t have to search too deep.. It was right there in the console! I sighed in relief.. Praise God!

I had slept in a little bit and awoke around 8:30am Monday morning.. No need to rush though it should seem as by bedtime last night everything was pretty much packed and in order.. I did have some printing to do.. Now a days when you fly they give you an itinerary online to bring to the airport.. You do not get your boarding passes until you arrive at the airport.. So I needed to print up the itinerary to bring with me. Well, of course the printer had to be out of ink.. lol.. and the new ink cartridge was being rejected by the printer itself.. Another moment of anxiety.. I spent the next hour fussing with the machine until finally I threw up my arms in haste and with a tone of self pity in my voice pleaded to Our Blessed Mother, “What do you want me to do! I thought you wanted me to come to Medjugorje!” She must have been laughing at the silliness of my panicky mood because suddenly the thought occurred to me that Greg has a computer in his office he uses daily.. There was absolutely no need for me to panic… I went downstairs and two minutes later I had the itinerary in my hands..

There were three of us from Canada on this pilgrimage. The rest of the pilgrims were from the Chicago Illinois to Green Bay Wisconsin area of the United States. By 3:30pm Monday we were on our way.. At least the three of us from Canada. Two ladies, my friend Barb and another named Elizabeth, and myself boarded a United Airlines flight in Detroit and were in Chicago O’ Hare airport 15 minutes later.. Well, sort of.. The duration of the flight itself was 1 hour and fifteen minutes but because of the time change we arrived only 15 minutes later.. I thought that was kind of neat! lol..

Soon we found our departing terminal to head to Frankfurt Germany.. A few Chicago area pilgrims were already there.. As I entered the gate area I first spotted a very familiar face.. It was Fr. Peter Mary Rookey, a well known healing priest, who has a ministry called the International Compassion Healing Ministry.. Us three Canadians walked over and greeted Fr. Rookey and those who were with him, including a secretary in his ministry named Sara who was looking after him. Sara asked me to sit next to Fr. Rookey while she tended to some things at the desk.

This was my very first opportunity to converse with this beautiful holy priest. I sat down in the seat next to Fr. Rookey as Barb, standing near us introduced me to him. It became very clear from the very first moment that this wonderful man also possessed a wonderful sense of humor.. He introduced himself as a rookie priest.. He is 93 years old.. lol.. Then he asked me where I was from? So I replied, “Father, I’m from Canada.” His eyes widened.. “Oh Canada.. my father was born in Canada. What part of Canada do you come from John?” I replied “That would be Detroit Canada Father.” lol.. and so we shared a good chuckle upon our first meeting.. Soon, the entire pilgrim group was with us in the boarding gate area and we were on the big Boeing 777 to Frankfurt Germany..

Chapter Fourteen: A Day In The Life Around Medjugorje

By John Christenson

“Dear children! Today also, I call each one of you to decide to surrender again everything completely to me. Only that way will I be able to present each of you to God. Dear children, you know that I love you immeasurably and that I desire each of you for myself, but God has given to all a freedom which I lovingly respect and humbly submit to.”
Our Lady of Medjugorje, November 25, 1987

I am a Christian. I am a simple layperson, humbled and most grateful to have been baptized twelve days after birth in the Roman Catholic Church. I am what is known as a cradle Catholic and I am eternally grateful that indeed I am Catholic.

However, I was not always a very faithful Catholic. In fact, for many years I was what is known as a ‘fallen away’ or lapsed Catholic. And it was not until the age of thirty seven that I would return and begin anew to practice my baptismal faith. It was not until then that I truly began to accept Jesus in my heart wanting to follow Him. But before I continue, I feel the need to admit to God, to you my friend who has taken a moment to read this book and to myself, that this new beginning was not necessarily chosen solely on my own accord. Indeed, it can be said that I chose to say ‘yes’ to Jesus, and this is why I enjoy the fruits of conversion. Then again it can also be said that it was the Lord Who graced me with that same ability to say ‘yes’ in the first place. It was during this period of my life at the age of thirty seven that I began to respond to a call to conversion. A journey which, in hindsight, I now realize I had been called to continuously each and every day of my life.

We are all called to conversion, each and every one of us. This includes the atheist & the believers alike.. The Christian & the Jew.. The Catholic & the Protestant.. It does not matter.. There are no exceptions. And because we are all on various paths or at various stages in our relationship with our Creator, yet never seeming to reach that fulfilling desire He has for us to return to him while here in this life, to answer His call is the same for each of us in that we all ought to begin and continue to say “yes” to Our Lord and our God.. Because it is in saying “yes” to Jesus that we become a Christian. It is in saying yes that we profess a Christian faith. This is what makes us a Christian. The first step, if you will. Though there are many steps to reaching a sense of fullness in Christ, the very first step must always be to simply say yes. This yes is our baptism by desire as we enter into the Sacrament of Baptism. Now who do we all know said "yes" to the Father in Heaven that made Christianity all possible to begin with? A love only a Mother would know.. :D

“Dear children, I am calling you individually to conversion. This season is for you. Thank you for having responded to my call.”
Medjugorje message, February 13, 1986

Our Blessed Mother began to call me into a journey of conversion in May, 2004. Or should I say, having been calling me all my life I finally began to respond to her call. Unknown to me at the time I had many people praying for my conversion. Many of you were among them.. Today, I am most thankful for your generous prayers. You prayed for me and God answered your prayers. Whether you knew me or not, you were answering Our Lady’s call to pray for conversions.. you were praying for the conversion of poor sinners and I certainly fell into this category.

At least one faithful soul who I personally did know at the time and who was praying for my conversion is a friend named Florence who had visited Medjugorje just prior to the start of my conversion. And so it is because of the prayers of those like Florence and of the many faithful in Medjugorje and around the world, that I am rather inclined to believe my conversion began. Prayer in itself is very powerful! That power is not ours but God’s power.. and it is for His glory.. Like all of you, Florence is one of many who have prayed continually for conversions and still does today.. You are all now Christ’s in my own life. She never preached a ‘word’ to me back then.. she simply showed me by example the right and true path.

So we pray for the conversion of sinners. This is what we do. This is a huge request from Our Blessed Mother in Medjugorje during these times. She wants all her precious children to return safely and securely under the refuge of her Most Immaculate Heart and Her Son’s Most Sacred Heart. We are children of the Holy Family. And like Her Son Jesus, She wants not one soul lost during these exceptionally turbulent times. She wants us to be spiritually prepared to receive Jesus each and every moment of our lives.

The duration of our physical journey trying to reach Medjugorje lasted about a day and a half.. We had all began this wonderful pilgrimage by coming from all our various locations Monday morning to meet up at Chicago O’hare airport for an early evening flight to Frankfurt Germany. It’s amazing how much energy you’re given! Even the elders of our group never lost their zip.. and despite having barely any sleep, by the time we reached Medjugorje everyone seemed eager and ready to just take it all in.. For most of us that journey began at one moment or another some time Monday morning.. Our spiritual journey to Medjugorje however, could have began weeks, months or even years earlier, depending on how each of us have been being called.. Departing from Chicago, it took us three airplanes and a bus to reach the quaint little Bosnian village that is not such a little village anymore. From Chicago, we flew to Frankfurt Germany.. From Frankfurt, we flew to Split.. and from Split, we took a bus into Medjugorje testing the new highway running through Croatia and Bosnia..

Approaching Medjugorje on the bus, Fr. Rookey sang Marian hymns and lead us all in prayers (Our Lady of Sorrows Chaplet) over the speaker system.. Today is the Feast of Our Lady’s birthday.. I could not think of a better place to be at this time than to be right here in Our Lady’s Heart.. For anyone who has never been to Medjugorje, the scenery is just breathtaking!

Close your eyes for a moment.. Picture yourself on a greyhound surrounded by faithful pilgrims.. A priest leading in prayer.. just out the window as the bus climbs along the mountainous winding highway you look down.. just beyond the guard rail (if there happens to be one.. lol.. ) the earth drops for hundreds of feet and disappears into valleys and canyons.. looking out you can see for miles, across the land.. across the Adriatic sea.. Your heart is warming to every moment you eagerly take it.. It’s just indescribably breathtaking!

We arrived in Medjugorje around 4:30pm local time. After unloading the bus of all our luggage, we gathered together in Mirjana’s dining room and sat down to eat our first meal.. Two ladies began to bring out platter of food for us in the most hospitable of ways.. It was Mirjana’s daughter and I believe her sister.. Fr. Rookey gave a blessing before we began to eat.. We enjoyed our first meal together and had plenty of time to attend our first Medjugorje Mass, the 7pm International Mass at St. James Parish..

If you are an English pilgrim, any typical day around St. James Parish in Medjugorje goes as follows.. The English Mass is at 10:00am.. There are Masses being said in various languages throughout the day.. They are back to back in terms of time frames, so often, as pilgrims are departing from Mass through the various exit’s there is somewhat of a struggle for the pilgrims trying to get in and take a seat before the next Mass begins.. So at 10:00am the English pilgrims are lining up at the side doors as the German pilgrims begin departing.. and at the end of the English Mass as we begin to depart we fight our way through a passionate crowd of Italians trying to get in before their Mass begins.. It can be a lot of fun! But also, dangerous if we are not vigilant of those around us, especially young children and the elderly.. So we are often being reminded during announcements at the conclusion of Mass to be extremely careful and to be curious of those around us..

Outside the Parish are the benches you’ve often seen in many Medjugorje pictures.. These benches line both sides of the Church building, as well as, surround the back of the Church where the outside Altar was built some years ago to accommodate much larger gatherings.. On the left side of the Church along the rows of benches are a row of Confessionals.. About 20 or so in total.. Depending on how many are being occupied at any given time, you will see small lines forming outside their doors.. on the door itself of every cubicle is a sign which reveals which language the priest speaks.. Also, there are priest’s in various locations around the grounds of the Parish with their little language signs placed next to their chair if you prefer to be outdoors..

During the summer schedule, the International Mass where most pilgrims of any language gather for in the early evening is at 7:00pm.. This changes to 6:00pm sometime after the Feast of the Holy Cross on September 13th.. Since the daily apparitions occur 20 minutes before Mass begins, likewise, as the Mass times roll back one hour in September, so too do the daily apparitions from 6:40pm to 5:40pm after September 13th.. At the moment of the daily apparition, everyone stops and kneels for a moment..

Atfer Mass, Bluecross & I met up for a coffee at Columbo’s.. I had went looking for him at Columbo’s suspecting that he might be there, but there was no Bluecross so I took a seat anyways and ordered an ‘American’ coffee.. A few minutes later Bluecross came walking up the way onto Colombo’s outside patio.. He had seen Fr. Rookey and a small group of pilgrims just after Mass and knowing I had came with this same group asked if anyone knew where I was.. My friend Barb knew I had gone to Colombo’s and so pointed him in that direction.. We embraced and welcomed each other, sat down at the table and began to chat..

Soon, a friend of Bluecross’ came to join us at our table. He had made an attempt earlier to climb Cross Mountain despite recently twisting his ankle.. What endurance! Imagine wanting to climb a fairly steep mountain that normally takes about an hour and a half to climb in good health with a twisted ankle.. But when he got just part way up the mountain he discovered a group of people were tending to a man lying on the ground. Well, as it turns out, this man had passed away right there on Cross Mountain. We know little details but believe he was a local man. Perhaps this is where he wanted to be at that time. Around that same time there was a moderate earthquake in the region. Many came forward later asking, “Did you feel the earthquake? It shook this..” or “It shook that..” I felt nothing.. lol…

Soon it was getting late and so Bluecross, his friend, and I said our “good byes” for the evening and I began my walk back to Mirjana’s in the dark.. It’s not so bad in town where there is light, but once you get outside of town it’s good to have a flashlight with you when you are walking during after sunset in Medjugorje.. I had two flashlights.. But they were both back in my room.. lol.. So I walked the road leading towards Cross Mountain, that turns and flows the mountain and then back into Podboro until I reached the laneway to Mirjana’s.. I prayed the Joyful Mysteries along the way.. Thinking back in hindsight I might have been better to pray the ‘luminous’ mysteries to light the path..

Chapter Fifteen A Morning With Fr. Rookey

"Dear children! Today I invite you all so that your prayer be prayer with the heart. Let each of you find time for prayer so that in prayer you discover God. I do not desire you to talk about prayer, but to pray. Let your every day be filled with prayer of gratitude to God for life and for all that you have. I do not desire your life to pass by in words but that you glorify God with deeds. I am with you and I am grateful to God for every moment spent with you. Thank you for having responded to my call."
Our Lady’s Medjugorje Message, April 25, 1991

I really enjoyed being blessed to be on a pilgrimage to Medjugorje with Fr. Peter Mary Rookey.. I have a lot of gratitude that I could be so blessed to have had the opportunity to meet and get to know a little about this very humble priest so loved by many.. Like many, I just loved listening to him speak! He is so full of wisdom and has an awesome sense of humor to go with it! :D lol.. My first encounter with this holy priest as I’ve already mentioned was at Chicago O’Hare airport waiting to board the plane to Europe.. Once in Germany we had enough time to spare before our next flight and so a few of us including Fr. Rookey were able to visit together over cappuccino at a little café in Frankfurt airport.. Fr. Rookey began to tell us of some of his own experiences throughout his priesthood, being a close friend of St. Padre Pio, and many of the miraculous healings he had witnessed over the years.. I just felt so blessed to be with him on this pilgrimage..

As we were boarding the plane to Split, a priest came out of nowhere, not of our group, who didn’t speak any English but seemed to know who Fr. Rookey was and wanted a blessing from him.. So right there at the boarding gate as people from all over were trying to board this plane, there was this priest kneeling down in front of Fr. Rookey as he gave him a blessing… Smiling the priest stood up afterward and then Fr. Rookey insisted that he give him a blessing as well.. It was just awesome to witness this between these two holy men!

I’ve noticed many physical changes around Medjugorje since my last visit in October 2008. There are more gift shops, more pansions, and even some nice hotels and apartment complexes popping up here and there. Last year, Medjugorje, at least to me anyways, appeared about the size of two or three average size American neighborhoods. This year, it’s more a collage of about a half dozen or so.. Still, for the most part everything is in walking distance if you are someone who enjoys the exercise.. not too many places are more than a 15 or 20 minute walk from St. James Parish which sits at the center of town.. And Medjugorje still has that ‘small town’ and friendly feel to it.. Something I hope it never loses..

I had heard from time to time over the past year that hardly anyone is going to Medjugorje anymore.. To be honest I have no clue where this is coming from.. It seemed busier this time then last year.. Perhaps Our Lady’s birthday had something to do with it, and maybe it did, but I suspect it was not only for this reason.. Our Lady’s birthday fell on the first day of our arrival.. Medjugorje was a happening place the entire time I was there.. Lot’s of miracles.. Lot’s of celebration in the Spirit.. And lot’s of praising God going on!

Well now back to Fr. Rookey.. lol.. Wednesday, September 9th, was our first full day in Medjugorje.. As I mentioned earlier, the morning English Mass is at 10:00am.. So naturally most of us found ourselves at St. James Parish by this time Wednesday morning.. Aside from non-Catholics of course, not too many people skip Mass here in Medjugorje.. and even many non-Catholics attend and often find themselves in awe over the reverence for Christ going on during Mass..

After Mass we exited the Church making our way through the Italian pilgrims eager to take a seat before their Mass began.. I gathered with Barb and Sarah from our group near the benches by the side doors to the Church on the confessionals side.. Barb says, “Where’s Fr. Rookey! We gotta get to him before everyone else does!” Kind of panicked Sarah turned toward me and yelled through the crowd, “John, you head over to the rectory doors and watch for Fr. Rookey.. You need to be his body guard!” ... "Body guard?" I thought.. lol.. that kind of sounds silly.. “Sarah, I’m 140 lbs soaking wet.. But okay, if you insist, I’ll do it..” I chuckled.. “Just get over there John! And make sure you get right by the doors as he comes out!’

So I walked over to the rectory doors and made my way through a gathering crowd of about 50 people that was growing 3, 4, and 5 at a time.. As I went to peek inside to see if he was coming out or at least in sight yet, a lady suddenly yells out, “Hey! You can’t go in there! That is for the priest’s only!” I turned toward her, saw the crowd was now numbering closer to a hundred people and said, “I know.. I know.. I’m just watching for Fr. Rookey, I…” But she interrupts saying, “Well then you’ll just have to go stand at the back of the line cause that’s who we’re all waiting for!” My next thought was, “Oh my! What have I gotten into? Help!” :o lol..

Soon, Fr. Rookey emerged from the rectory and as I tried to get behind him suddenly I got knocked by a pilgrim eager to get in close to Fr. Rookey, everyone was moving in close to him, I lost my balance and fell into the wall of the Church as he continued to walk ahead in the other direction.. I quickly got my balance and tried to get through the crowd to help him but it was becoming increasingly difficult.. there were so many people all wanting to touch him, to ask for his blessing, to have him pray for them, over them.. Whatever it would take to be healed.. Everyone wanted to be healed.. By this time Barb and Sarah had fought their way through the crowd and up to him and were calling out for me walking along the outside of the crowd.. That’s when the same Irish pilgrim who had earlier scolded me about being at the door to the rectory now realized I was supposed to be helping him and started to clear a path for me to get in behind Fr. Rookey.. “What a rock star!” I thought… lol.. Here is this 93 year old priest who had you not known, you would have thought was Jesus Himself trying to make his way through the crowd.. lol..

As we continued to walk towards the yellow building to hear Fr. Danko speak, I now walking directly behind Fr. Rookey, someone in the crowd leans over towards me and says, “How old is he now?” and I responded, “He’s 92.. Can you believe it!” Well, apparently Fr. Rookey overheard me.. He stops, turns to me and says, “Hey! I’m not that old! I’m only 93!” :D lol…. Anyways, mainly because of the amount of people seeking a blessing from him it took us about 15 minutes to walk from the Church to the yellow building about 200 feet away.. Fr. Rookey turned no one away..

Chapter Sixteen: Fr. Danko’s Talk

By John Christenson

See Full Testimony Here

Fr. Danko is one of the Franciscan priests who gives talks regularly in the yellow building located not far behind St. James Parish. During the walk from St. James to the yellow building to hear Fr. Danko give his talk, I must have been handed about 50 prayer petitions to give to Fr. Rookey. The pilgrims just love him! Especially the Irish and the Italians.

As we entered the building to take a seat Sara, one of Fr. Rookey’s secretaries who accompanied Father on this pilgrimage had went ahead to save us some seats near the front so that Fr. Rookey would be able to sit during the talk. The building was packed as I suspect it usually is.. We took our seats as Fr. Danko stood at the front ready to speak. Pilgrims continued to approach Fr. Rookey right up until the talk began. Fr. Danko began first with a prayer and then proceeded to give his talk.. I regret that I was not able to record his talk but I did take notes.. So the following are various words of wisdom I had quoted Fr. Danko saying during his talk about Medjugorje and Our Lady’s message of conversion.. (as to not confuse who’s thoughts are who’s, Fr. Danko’s words appear in red)

Just as many of us were snapping pictures at random of Fr. Danko, Bluecross and I included.. lol.. all of us present and taking pictures suddenly found ourselves humbled by the words, “A tourist is armed with a camera.. A pilgrim is armed with Rosary beads..” Then he began to talk about prayer.. Genuine prayer.. Our continual conversation with God.. The love relationship that we all yearn to have with God.. “We have no problem with God.." He began.. "Our problem is with people.” And how true this is.. I mean, I think about this, if I was the only person in the world and walked daily with God by my side and I by God’s side would I have any problems? Would I have any worries? Would I have any fears?

“The two most difficult things as pilgrims for us to work on when we come to Medjugorje is conversion and forgiveness.. We must say with all our heart, “Jesus, I decide for You.. I cannot live like this any longer.. If the prayer is not changing you, then you have to change the prayer… you must be sincere when you pray.. You cannot lie to God.. God’s will is our salvation… God is not interested in your sins.. He is only interested in you..”

This really hit home for me.. I fell into a spiritual slump a few years ago.. a spiritual darkness, a time when I still believed, and I still prayed, but my life was seeming more and more hopeless.. I wasn’t growing, but instead, it felt as if I was retreating backwards in my journey.. And soon I was beginning to lose a sense of hope.. I did not fall into despair, but for the longest time I felt as if I was on the edge it despairs cliffs.. And I was running into the confessional almost daily seeking forgiveness for my sins and counsel to try to get out of this slump.. But what good was the counsel if I was not making good use of it? In an act of contrition we say “and I firmly resolve to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life..” And it’s this last part ‘amend my life’ that often needs the most effort from us.. Continually amending our defines conversion.. And perhaps, it is for this reason that St. James Parish has about 40 confessionals going at any given moment during the day and some people spend up to an hour waiting in line to go to confession, that Fr. Danko would say.. “Here in Medjugorje is where peace is lived.. No one has ever returned home in the same way that they came to Medjugorje.. Medjugorje has become the confessional capital of the world and of the Church..”

Now Thursday morning I completely missed our pilgrim group’s journey up Apparition Hill. The day before when it was announced by our guide Miki Musa that we would be going up to Apparition Hill at 6:00am I was not present to hear the announcement.. And I had not thought to look at the next day’s agenda posted on the wall in the main dining room at Mirjana’s.. I had been over at the Parish speaking with Alexandra who oversees the various choirs at St. James who provide music during Mass about playing the piano for the 10:00am English Mass when Miki had made the announcement so unfortunately I missed out. I did however make it up Apparition Hill twice on my own to spend quiet time in prayer during this recent pilgrimage, and of course was able to be present with everyone’s prayer petitions on Friday, Sept 11th during Ivan’s Apparition at 10:00pm.. So when I awoke around 7:30am Thursday morning there was no one around and I didn’t know why.. After going for a walk to have a morning coffee at Podboro Café I returned to Mirjana’s a short time later and learned from Jim who had stayed behind that our group was up on Apparition Hill but should be coming back down shortly..

See, my friend Barb noticed that there was currently no piano player for the English morning Mass.. And so she decided it would be a good idea to bring to Alexandra’s attention that there was someone attending the English Mass every morning right now who could play the piano.. So an arrangement had been made for me to meet with Alexandra on Wednesday morning just after Mass which I did in order to get acquainted and feel out if I could actually do this.. You see, I’m not a professional and I can’t read sheet music at all.. I play by ear .. Well, that is until my ears get sore, then I usually use my fingers.. Seriously though, if I sat at the piano and you placed the sheet music to Three Blind Mice in front of me I wouldn’t be able to make any sense of it.. It’s a beautiful gift but it’s also a terrifying challenge at times.. I still need to know what key I’m in and I need to know the chord progression… So generally, I follow guitar chords and ad lib the rest.. And if I’ve never heard the song in my entire life which pretty much happened with most sings or hymns at each Mass it can be like trying to drive an automobile blindfolded.. lol..

So around 9:00am Thursday morning I met with Alexandra again over by the Confessionals to go over the music for the English Mass.. I was very excited about having an opportunity to play piano at St. James Parish, but I was also extremely nervous.. I just didn’t feel ready.. I’m pretty much always nervous about playing in front of large gatherings to begin with but this morning I was exceptionally nervous because in order for everything to go smoothly it would really require a miracle.. I didn’t know any of the hymns at all.. Not a one! Alexandra introduced me to an Irish man named Joe who was currently playing guitar with the choir while he was in Medjugorje at least for the next few days .. Well, as it turned out, everything was pretty much already set for the morning Mass and I wasn’t needed just yet.. I ended up being given the day to prepare for tomorrows Mass instead.. whew!

Chapter Seventeen: Main Street Medjugorje

By John Christenson

See Full Testimony Here

Today, the village of Medjugorje is quite a growing community. This once tiny hamlet now turning into a rather large booming town is made up for the most part of faithful souls yearning for a closer and more intimate relationship with God. Since the early 1980’s most of the Medjugorje population has not been her residents but her guest’s.. Pilgrims as you know coming from all corners of the world.. And aside from enduring the horrible pangs of a vicious war during the early to mid 1990’s, this faithful community has been steadily growing for 28 years now. Naturally, because of the great multitude of pilgrims who come to Medjugorje each year the merchant industry is growing as well.. And each year more and more of these quaint little Rosary shops and European café’s open up all along the Medjugorje roads along with new Pansions and even accommodating hotels.

Even the dirt paths leading to and fro Medjugorje to other smaller villages have many locals setting up tables selling hand made Rosaries and other sacramental’s, and even home made wine, honey and other assorted goodies .. I must say however, as a pilgrim myself being brought here by Our Lady so that I could learn to live the Medjugorje message like others I found none of this to be a real distraction in any way or a real turn off commercially speaking.. It’s all still rather quaint and cozy in comparison to the hustle and bustle back home.. And believe me, I’m just as easily turned off by commercialism as the next fellow.. Especially in a place as holy as Medjugorje.. But it’s the manner in which things are done around here that I found the vending to be a nice touch to the village rather than a distraction.. I suppose this would be because of the hospitality you receive just about everywhere you enter as well as the fact that for the most part the vendors themselves practice their faith.. I pray that Medjugorje never loses that quaint and cozy feel..

True, there are some stores opening along the way by outsiders perhaps whose sole intent is to make a profit. You will always have that anywhere you have a continual flow of large gatherings. We cannot judge the hearts of every vendor however who strolls into town to set up shop. But thrown in the mix here in Medjugorje are faithful locals born and raised here who are simply trying to earn a living like anyone else. And I believe it is because of these faithful locals who tend to keep the other merchants pricing humbled so that they do not try and gouge the customers. The prices of Rosaries, other sacramentals, and other commodities in comparison to American standards are actually very reasonable. Just to give you an example, Rosaries start at about $2 or $3 U.S. dollars and up. That is not expensive at all by any means. And then there are the cabbies. There are cab services just outside the Parish grounds available for those who find it difficult to get around town. No meter running, the cabbie will take you just about anywhere you want to go around the village for a flat rate of 5 Euro..

Also just outside the grounds of St. James Parish is a long covered walkway that leads from the Church to the main street. And at the very end of this walkway just as you are about to enter onto the Parish grounds is a Travel Agency complete with internet facilities owned by a man named Alin and his wife Zana who over time have become friends of mine and Stella.. Alin and Zana just had a baby last November and this past July Zana has had to cope with the death of her mother who was only 58 years old. So it’s been an intense year for Alin & Zana and we keep this wonderful couple in our prayers.

Now just down the road a bit from the Church is Emmanuel’s gift shop. Emmanuel and his wife Anita have a small Rosary & gift shop tucked in a row of other gift shops, another internet café, and Mary’s Meals, a non-profit organization that feeds under privileged children in the local area. Mary’s Meals is a charity mission created by the humanitarian organization called the Scottish International Relief, founded in 1992. Staffed by local volunteers, this much needed charity provides for the needs of local children who otherwise have nothing or very little.

Over time Anita has become a very good friend of our friend Stella. You may recognize her name as one of the forum members on Stella’s forum. While in Medjugorje recently I wanted to get a nice wedding present for my sister Louise and her fiancé Curtis, as they were getting married two days after I was to return home. Anita and Emmanuel took very good care of me. Anita brought me around to look at various options and explained to me about a very common marriage custom to the locals. When a couple get married in Medjugorje there is a greater focus on the three become one, rather then the two becoming one.. The three being the bride, the groom, and of course God who they invite to be at the very center of their marriage just as God is calling them to be married. So Anita explained to me that a perfect gift for Louise and Curtis would be a Crucifix which the couple gently place their hands over together as they give their vows along with a blessed candle and a marriage Rosary, which is two Rosaries joined together. I chose a beautiful wood crucifix that had three little glass enclosures on it that contains soil, tiny stones, and seeds that are native to the Medjugorje area. The blessed candle I picked out for Louise and Curtis has the Joyful Mysteries on it.

As of this recent pilgrimage to Medjugorje I now have three little café’s I favor. Lol.. One of them being a sure favorite of many including our friend Bluecross called Colombo’s.. Another just a little down the road in the opposite direction of the Church is Victor’s, and a third café I had not known about last year which quickly became a favorite of mine to take a moment to rest this time around is a Tiny café located right at the foot of Apparition Hill as you begin your journey upwards called Holy Grounds Café. However, I’m saving my sharing about Holy Grounds Café for a later article I will post here on the forum as it’s owner Oliver was kind enough to take the time one morning to sit down with me and let me interview him.

Colombo’s and Victor’s seem to be hot spots if you are a pilgrim walking in the vicinity of St. James Church. There is also Coco’s located right near the Parish and I’ve heard they have awesome pizza though I rarely visited there myself. Colombo’s is a rather large café with two floors and an outdoor patio, all tucked in between a few buildings which creates that cozy European atmosphere I spoke of earlier. I’m not clear on the seating capacity though as I never thought to ask but I would estimate that Colombo’s seats some where’s over 100 people. Bluecross could answer that better as it’s his favorite spot to be while in Medjugorje but outside of any religious grounds.

Victor’s is a smaller restaurant, however I must say he never suffers a lack of business by any means. Along with Colombo’s, Victors seems to be favored by many pilgrims, especially the Irish. Perhaps this is because Victor has an acoustic guitar hanging on the wall which is available to anyone who wants to start up a sing along.. Something the Irish pilgrim groups are well known for.. And many nights he ends up closing quite late because the pilgrims are just having way too much fun. Lol..

Walking along the main road of Medjugorje the pilgrim finds rows and rows of these quaint little Rosary shops with little café’s tucked in between them from time to time. Or vise versa.. Perhaps it’s the Rosary shops tucked in between the café’s. Either way, this blend of European café’s and boutiques create a very pleasant atmosphere for the wandering pilgrim out for a walk along Main Street Medjugorje, contrary to the hustle and bustle we often experience back home. It’s all rather cozy to be honest.

No one is in a real hurry here in Medjugorje.. I mean, where is it that you need to get to so quickly when you are given plenty of time to get there? And that includes the merchants.. Interestingly enough, they seem to be in no real hurry to sell you their goods. On several occasions both during this recent pilgrimage as well as last years October pilgrimage I often found myself when browsing the many shops falling into long winded conversations with either the owners or their employees and leaving after 20, 30 or 45 minutes later having purchased nothing from them, yet, to have the new friend I just made smile and wave good bye as I left the store. No one pushes sales here. And that is why I say the commercialism that does exist here in Medjugorje as a result of the many pilgrims is not at all a turn off but a rather nice European touch to the pilgrimage I’ve found myself on. I believe the Western world, even at the level of commercialism & consumerism could really learn a lot from the way things are done in this little Oasis of Peace.

The locals are very friendly in Medjugorje. Whether they are a vendor, a shop owner, a café owner or simply a local tending to his garden pilgrims are always made to feel very welcomed here. One day, our group had been invited by Joso, a local artist and farmer who has become a very good friend to Jim Lightner. I will tell of this visit in a later post, however, for the moment I just want to give an example of the hospitality of the local people even those locals who are otherwise generally complete strangers to the pilgrims. When it was time to leave Joso’s and head back into town a few of us decided to walk when we discovered during our visit that we were actually only about a 15 minute walk to the Parish.

Barb and I had just began walking away from Joso’s when we passed the home of a local woman who spoke no English at all and nodded as a friendly gesture to say hello in passing. She motioned as if to be calling us over to her. So we began to walk towards her and she rose from her seat to greet us. As much as we were unable to speak to each other because of our language barriers it did not seem to matter. She seemed to be insisting that Barb and I come into her home and visit for a while.. Well, we didn’t want to be rude and so we entered into her home and were immediately greeted by a life size mural on the wall of her entrance of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It was indescribably beautiful. We spent perhaps about 15 or 20 minutes with this wonderful lady who just seemed to want some company. We would have stayed longer but we did need to get back. And though it was a bit awkward to try and communicate with her it was also a lot of fun.. lol.. and she seemed to enjoy us even more than we were enjoying trying to communicate with her. This elderly woman just had the biggest heart, and as we were leaving she insisted we take some fruit with us. It would be a great insult to refuse and so we accepted her offering which ended up being a huge bag full of fresh fruit, enough to offer to everyone back at Mirjana’s..

There are so many other wonderful places I could write about here. I just wanted to try and create a feel for those who have not yet had the opportunity to make a pilgrimage to Medjugorje of what everyday life might be like for both the pilgrim and those native to Medjugorje.

Chapter Eighteen: The Morning of 911, Eight Years Later.. September 11, 2009

September 11, 2001… Is there a soul on the face of the earth who can not recall what they were doing that fateful morning as the breaking news began to roll in on our television screens and over our radios? And as horrifying a reality as it was for the vast majority of us to witness none of us can truly wrap our minds around what it must have been like for those responding to the mornings tragic events.. nor can we begin to fathom what it must have been like for the family members at home frantically trying to find out any information they could because a loved one was somewhere in that terrible inferno…

Well, in the next part (Part 8) which I will cover the later part of this day I will share about an interesting and touching conversation I had on Ivan's front porch with Rita Hayden, the wife of Peter Hayden, a NY Firefighter who was in Tower Two of the World Trade Center just moments before it collapsed on September 11th, 2001.. I would have never imagined having an actual conversation with the wife of a NY Firefighter who along with many risked his own life to save so many others on the anniversary of September 11th.. But because this post is so long already I am breaking this day's events into two parts.. So please hang in there, the conversation Rita and I had is coming next..

Like all of us, I remember that morning well.. Back then, I was working 14-16 hour days.. This was before my conversion and outside of work I hardly ever made time much for anything, sad to say even my family.. September 11, 2001 was the very first day of school ever for my daughter Elise.. She began Junior Kindergarten that day.. Elizabeth had already sent Nathaniel off to school on the bus moments earlier.. Elise now sat on the living room floor watching her children’s shows on Treehouse, a Canadian television version of Nickelodeon.. As the events of that morning began all television stations, including kids stations like Treehouse had breaking news almost immediately..

I was on my way to work in the car just on the outskirts of town heading to a new home I was taping and mudding.. About half way to the job I turned the car radio on to listen to the Dick Purtin Morning Show, and as I turned it on I heard Katie Couric’s voice which I thought was really odd.. “Why is Katie Couric on the morning show with Dick Purtin, a local Detroit show? Well, as it soon became evident she wasn’t.. Dick Purtin was tapping into the Today Show live to allow us to listen..

A plane had just hit the first tower a few minutes before I turned the radio on, and my first thought even though they had not yet even mentioned or suggested terrorism believe it or not was Osama Bin Laden.. Most people had never heard of him.. At least in my neck of the woods.. However, Elizabeth and I had a weekly tradition going at that time.. Every Saturday night we always tried to be home to watch America’s most Wanted… Osama Bin Laden had been profiled just recently.. maybe a few weeks before so he was fresh in my mind the morning of September 11th… As the news suddenly came in that a 2cd plane had just hit the other tower I pulled the car over and parked for a moment, bowing my head in silent prayer..

Little did I know that eight years later on the anniversary of September 11th, I would be prayerfully joining others at morning Mass right here in Medjugorje remembering all the victims of that horrible day… Nor would I have ever thought that as of today I would always remember September 11th for the rest of my life also as the first day I was blessed to have the opportunity to play piano at St. James Parish.. So naturally, I offered everything up today, my nervousness, my piano playing, my walks, my time alone in prayer, and everything that went on throughout the day for the victims of 911…

I awoke this morning feeling rather anxious, nervous and apprehensive.. Today would be the day I would play the piano at the morning English Mass at St. James Parish. I was also very excited mind you… I mean, what a humbling honor to be given the opportunity to play piano right here in St. James Parish.. Anytime I am able to use the talents God has given me to assist in the Holy Mass I am deeply humbled… But to sit down at the piano right here in St. James Parish? Me? “Holy Mother, you must have the wrong person.. Surely there must be someone here who plays much better than I.. ” Yet, just as She had said to Ivan when he asked Our Lady “Why me.. Why choose me?” My question was answered later this same morning at Ivan’s talk when he told us of Our Lady’s words to him, “Dear child, I am never looking for the best ones.”

The nervousness must have shown in me for when I stepped outside first thing this morning with my coffee the very first thing anyone said to me was, “Relax John.. You’re going to do alright.” Why can I not have confidence so easily in the graces God gives me? Is this not lack of trust that I would be so nervous? I say, “Jesus, I trust in You.” But do I truly mean it from my heart? I know in my head that everything will be alright.. All logic tells me that Our Lady will see to things that all goes well according to Her plan.. So why be nervous? Yet I am… I want everything to go well for Our Lady.. I want to give Her my very best.. I want to give God the very best for His glory..

Because of my inadequacy of which I am well aware of, I lack confidence.. In John, Chapter 15, Jesus says, “Without Me, you can do nothing.” and again, in 2 Corinthians, Chapter 12, Jesus says to Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for (God’s) power is made perfect in (my) weakness” So knowing this, if I am lacking in enough trust in God to remain calm then to me it only goes to reason that I lack faith.. With faith the size of a mustard seed Jesus tells me I can move mountains.. Well, I know Jesus is Absolute Truth.. He does not lie.. So if I can move mountains using a mustard seed I can surely move my fingers to produce a nice melody on a string of white keys.. “Okay Mother Mary, you take over..”

As I left Mirjana’s this morning to walk along the dirt path leading from Podbrdo to Medjugorje I prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet hoping I would retain the sense of self-confidence God’s graces just poured into me… But when I came to the words near the end of the Chaplet, “Jesus, I trust in You..” I heard “Do you trust Me?” I said “Of course I do Lord.” Three times I said this part of the prayer and three times I heard, “Do you trust in Me?” Each time my trust in Jesus grew that much more. And when it would come time to sit down and play my nerves would be calm and the confidence was actually there.. Something that definitely could not come from me.. Did I make a few mistakes? Yeah I did.. But nothing so dramatic that brought Mass to a screeching halt as all eyes fell upon me with a look of ‘shame on you’ .. lol.. I did okay…

It was still rather early when I arrived near the Parish. I had to wait patiently for Alin’s internet café to open so that I could hopefully retrieve my emails and obtain the music I needed for this mornings Mass. Being that I had to wait for Alin to open up shop I had a coffee at Victor’s until 9:00am.. The night before I had emailed Greg back at Don Bosco Home asking him to forward me the music I would need so that I could walk in somewhat prepared.. There were a few hymns I did not know.. Namely, Lift High the Cross & We Shall Overcome. The hymns that were chosen for this mornings Mass were purposely chosen by Fr. Kevin who is from New York City to commemorate the anniversary of 911.. So the hymns were as follows, Lift High the Cross, Spirit of the Living God, Peace is Flowing Like a River, The Prayer of St. Francis, and We Shall Overcome..

Alin soon arrived and opened up and I was able to retrieve my emails. Thank God for such technology! Here I am half way around the world in Europe and I was still able to obtain the music I needed from Greg as if I had walked into the next room to ask him. There is no where in Medjugorje including the Parish office to obtain the music one would need for Mass.. In fact, in wanting to sit down and practice at a piano ahead of time, I discovered that outside of St. James Parish apparently there is only one other piano in the entire town, and that is at Mother’s Village.. So practicing was simply out of the question.. Yep, I was pretty much going into this as they say, on the wing of a prayer.. lol..

Shortly before 10:00am I snuck in behind Alexandra and the others from the choir so as to have time to get in and set up at the piano before Mass began. Everything went well except when I went to play Jesus, Lamb of God the choir knew the version I was doing but was unfamiliar with the way our choir back home does it.. And I don’t sing, (lol) so they didn’t come in at the right moment which caused us all to stumble a bit and threw things off for a brief moment until we could all quickly get our bearings again. In that split second of panic my heart dropped, “Oh my gosh! Help!!” The look on Alexandra’s face told it all… lol… and then a second later everything was fine and we were back on course..

Oh, the joys of being human.. lol.. Well, my piano playing couldn’t have been too bad though.. Alexandra asked if I would return to play again the following day.. The only complaint was from several people who said they could not hear me.. Including Stella, who emailed me to say she watched Mass online and couldn’t hear me.. lol.. I thought that was pretty neat that she could do that.. lol.. So anyways, tomorrow I will definitely have to turn the volume on the piano up a little more..

Fr. Kevin gave a heartfelt testimony during his Homily, especially being that he had been right down there at Ground Zero on September 11th, 2001.. And being that this week we celebrated the Feast of the Holy Cross, he tied September 11th very well into the importance of embracing the Cross together as one united with Christ..

"Dear children! Without prayer there is no peace. Therefore I say to you, dear children, pray at the foot of the cross for peace. Thank you for having responded to my call."
Our Lady’s Medjugorje Message, September 6, 1984

After Mass on the morning of September 11th, 2009 was Ivan’s talk. I stood with Bluecross and chatted for a while before the doors opened and we were able to enter into the Yellow building to take a seat. The following are notes I took during Ivan’s talk..

We began with a prayer.. An Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be… Then, Ivan began by reaffirming with us and reminding each of us that Medjugorje is a School of Prayer.. That is what Medjugorje is.. A school of prayer.. And when you mention Medjugorje to someone who has never heard of this special place and they look at you rather puzzled and they say to you, “What is Medjugorje?” Before you begin to get into everything, the first thing you might say to them is that “Medjugorje is a school of prayer where we learn to grow through Our Lady’s messages closer to God every day of our lives.”

“In the early days of the Apparitions,” Ivan began, “I kept asking Our Lady, “Why me? How come you chose me to come to?”

Finally one day Our Lady said to Ivan, “Dear child, I am never looking for the best ones.”

“I never asked Our Lady again.”

“The most important messages are about peace, conversion, forgiveness, the Eucharist, and the message of hope..”

“Peace! Peace! Peace! The world is in great need of peace.. Peace must reign between God and people and between people themselves. We have distanced ourselves from God.. from prayer.. from prayer in family.. Only in Her Son can we find true peace..”

We have no time for each other. No love, no faithfulness. The world is falling apart. This modern world. That is why Mother is calling – to bring back prayer to our families- peace- love that is so much needed in the world today.”

“If one has no peace in the heart, in themselves, in the family, there is no way of bringing peace into the world. We need not talk so much but live prayer.” Our Lady Said, “I need you.. Only with you can I bring this peace.”

“How many times you say to your children, “Be good” – thousands of times, are you tired?” Our Lady is not tired… She must repeat in order that we not forget.. “

“She did not come to talk about the end of the world, or about fear.. No- but about HOPE.. She is coming to the families, to the Church, and in a special way to bring us to the Holy Mass- as the center of life… If you had a choice to come to an apparition or to go to Mass would you choose to come to the Apparition over going to Mass? The Holy Mass should always be your choice.”

“Our Lady is calling us to monthly Confession, to Adoration, to Veneration, to pray the Rosary and to read the Bible with the family.. Make the Bible visible in the home.. Jesus will be in your heart when you do these things..”

“Pray! Pray! Pray! In this school of prayer there are no breaks, no weekends… to pray is a grace only given to those who pray more.. We need to be responsible to this call..”

Chapter Nineteen: Because Prayer Works Miracles in Human Hearts

"Dear children! Also today I call you to pray from your whole heart and to love each other. Little children, you are chosen to witness peace and joy. If there is no peace, pray and you will receive it. Through you and your prayer, little children, peace will begin to flow through the world. That is why, little children, pray, pray, pray, because prayer works miracles in human hearts and in the world. I am with you and I thank God for each of you who has accepted and lives prayer with seriousness. Thank you for having responded to my call."
Our Lady’s Medjugorje Message of October 25, 2001

I’ve heard it said before that when a person suddenly finds themselves going on a pilgrimage to Medjugorje, whether it be the very first time or the 20th time, that no matter how much one might think their pilgrimage is of human plan, truth be told, it is actually Our Lady calling us into her Heart… That She has chosen you to come to Medjugorje.. She is behind this plan, not us.. And it is in Her plans that we find ourselves going to Medjugorje, not ours. I know myself, it is purely miraculous that I ever made it to Medjugorje.. And not once but twice now I have made a pilgrimage to Our Lady’s Heart..

I do not say this to boast, but actually out of humility because what it tells me is that I am in need of learning.. I do not know it all when it comes to walking in faith. I have so much to learn.. And it is in needing to learn to walk just as an infant that I believe She has brought me to Medjugorje these past two times.. And if this be true, then may there be more times for I have not mastered this faith we call Christianity yet.. Indeed, I have so much to learn.

Our Lady’s plan is God’s plan. If Our Lady wills it, it is because God wills it and has allowed Our Lady to intercede in our lives.. All of this achieved according to God’s will.. Be it done unto me according to Your will. Well, the same understanding of divine assistance and guidance can certainly be applied to the Medjugorje locals in how they fit into Our Lady's gently woven plan. Just as God has a plan for each one of us He has a plan for each one of them just as well. The role the locals play in Our Lady’s plan may seem more evident in the lives of some then others, such as the guides who greet us pilgrims upon our arrival and tend to our needs the best they can..

Truth is, we all serve an intricate purpose in Our Lady’s plan. God has a plan for each and every one of us and in order to help us fulfill that plan He sends us His Blessed Mother to be with us and guide us along the way to conversion.. Conversion towards Christ. From the word Conversion comes the word converse.. To converse means to speak with.. When we speak with God we call this prayer, and thus, in this conversing with God we draw closer to Him. That is what conversion means. How blessed we all truly are that Our Holy Mother would come to us these past 28 years to converse with us and draw us closer in conversion to Her Son Jesus the Christ..

I would like to tell you about a special friend I made while in Medjugorje this past pilgrimage. Oliver is a peaceful and humble man, rarely seen without Rosary beads in his hands.. He is a prayerful man.. A local who, though being a bit younger than the visionaries, grew up in the same surroundings interacting in the same way and learning to converse with God along with the other locals..

I met Oliver the night of Ivan's Apparition during our recent pilgrimage.. Actually, I met Oliver just as the Apparition began that night. Being present during Ivan’s apparition and my encounter with Oliver came together at the very same moment. You see, Oliver is the owner of Holy Grounds Cafe, located right at the very foot of Apparition Hill just as you begin its climb. The patio of Holy Grounds cafe literally shares the entrance to Apparition Hill. When you begin to climb the Hill, if you maneuver a little to the left you go straight up the Hill, and if not paying attention you happen to maneuver just a little too far to the right you wind up on Oliver's patio. :) Literally.. lol.. Well, okay, I think you get the picture now... lol..

Anyways, have you ever had a first encounter with someone and you just know right from the very first moment that you are meeting a very special soul? They haven’t necessarily even exchanged a word with you yet, in other words conversed with you, but you just know it... You just feel it about this person? That there is something special about this soul.. Compassion.. There was a strong sense of compassion I recognized immediately in Oliver..

Well, the very first moment I met him it was as if Our Lady leaned over my shoulder and whispered in my ear, “This is my child Oliver who I have chosen to have his little café here at the foot of Apparition Hill.” That was the strong sense I got the moment I met Oliver.. That Our Lady had put him here Herself. I knew absolutely nothing about him but the feeling was very strong none the less. And before even exchanging a single word between us it was also placed on my heart that I was about to meet a friend for life… Something that was confirmed by Oliver’s own words just a few days later.

Now, the Apparition was to occur at10pm. My friend Barb and I arrived at the Hill shortly before ten. It was now dark and there were approximately 3000 people armed with Rosary beads in one hand and a flashlight in the other. 3000 who had already made their way up the hill to some point or another which 3000 flickering lights along the hillside just made for a very beautiful Medjugorje backdrop that evening. Still more were arriving by the minute. Making our way toward Apparition Hill we passed rows and rows of tour buses hugging the shoulders of both sides of the road, and hoards of pilgrims lining the streets all heading in one direction. From a distance looking towards the Hill we saw total darkness ahead with the exception of 1000’s of little flickering lights. It was simply gorgeous!

When Barb and I arrived at the foot of the Hill, Barb didn't want to climb any further because she was watching for Sarah and Fr. Rookey. Though unable to climb the Hill, Fr. Rookey wanted to be present for Ivan's Apparition. So Sarah was going to accompany Father just to the foot of the Hill and meet up with Barb and I... Shortly after Barb and I arrived, we spotted Sarah and Fr. Rookey making their way up the slanted cobblestone driveway leading to the entrance to the Hill. We agreed to take a seat in the cafe on our right.

The climb itself just up to the entrance of the Hill was enough for Father to need to sit down and rest. I'm 43 years old myself and found the climb a bit of a challenge. I'm simply awed by the strength and stamina this 93 year old priest seemed to have while in Medjugorje. Those who know him personally and are around him all the time say that he gains a tremendous amount of energy and stamina whenever he's in Medjugorje.

As we entered onto the patio of Holy Grounds, we were immediately greeted by a deeply humbled man who eagerly went out of his way to take good care of us. The reason I say deeply humbled was because Oliver knew of Fr. Rookey for some years and had wanted for years to have Fr. Rookey pray over him but had not yet had the opportunity to meet him. He was deeply touched that Fr. Rookey had suddenly found himself in his establishment to ask for a place to rest. Now while Oliver took Sara, Barb, and Fr. Rookey to sit at a table I slipped away to go up the Hill just a bit alone to pray. Well, not exactly alone considering I was literally surrounded by thousands of pilgrims.

Suddenly, I dropped to my knees... As if God had placed His Hand on my shoulder and applied a gentle pressure motioning for me to do so… The next thing I know overwhelmed with emotion I have tears running down the cheeks of my face and I’m not even sure why at first. However, in the moment I began to pour out my heart to Our Lady… I held up the bag in my hand that contained all the prayer petitions that had been entrusted to me prior to leaving for Medjugorje and I asked Our Lady to tend to each and every prayer request saying, “Mother, You know the hearts of your children.. Please hear our pleas… please intercede for us..”

A few minutes later I gathered myself together, stood up to my feet and returned back to Oliver’s café to join the group… By this time Joyce Lightner had joined Fr. Rookey and the group as well. As I approached the table our group was sitting at it became evident that we were praying the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary together right there in the Café. And there was Oliver his Rosary in hand praying right along with everyone. After the Rosary and a bit of chatting it was time to head back to Mirjana’s. We said our ‘goodbyes’ and thanked Oliver for his hospitality and began to make our descent down the cobblestone pathway to the main road that goes through Podbrdo.

Chapter Twenty: My Conversation with Rita, wife of NY Firefighter

By John Christenson

"Dear children! Today I invite you to prayer. Let prayer be life for you. A family cannot say that it is in peace if it does not pray. Therefore, let your morning begin with morning prayer, and the evening end with thanksgiving. Little children, I am with you, and I love you and I bless you and I wish for every one of you to be in my embrace. You cannot be in my embrace if you are not ready to pray every day. Thank you for having responded to my call."
Our Lady’s Medjugorje Message, August 25, 1995

Shortly after we turned onto the street Mirjana lives on, Joyce suggested we stop by Ivan’s for a moment. I asked, “Can we just do that?” And she said, “Sure we can. He might not be able to come out and talk to us, but we can stop by.” It hadn’t occurred to me when I asked that like Mirjana, Ivan also takes in pilgrims into his home. But as we mad our way up the sidewalk and onto the front veranda we were greeted and made to feel very welcomed by some of the pilgrims staying at Ivan’s. It was nice to have two separate pilgrim groups come together as one to share like this…

The group staying at Ivan’s was from the New York city area.. As our two groups broke off into our little conversations I soon found myself chatting with lady from Ney York City named Rita Hayden… The following is the conversation Rita and I had on September 11th, 2009… about September 11th,, 2001…

As Rita and I began to converse she asked me where I was from,
“I’m from Canada Rita.. Windsor, Ontario to be exact.” I explained. ”It’s just across the river from Detroit Michigan.”
“Oh, your group is from Canada?” She asked. ”But isn’t Fr. Rookey from the States?”
Oh no no!” I exclaimed. ”Well yes, actually he is from Chicago.. You see, our group is from the Chicago and Wisconsin area of the States, but three of us come from Canada and joined this group to be with Fr. Rookey..” I explained, “My friend Barb over there (pointing to Barb) became friends with Fr. Rookey’s secretary Sara over the past few years. So instead of going with the Canadian group we usually go with, we came with this group instead. We’re staying across the street at Mirjana’s… Where are you from Rita?
“I’m from New York City John.”
”Oh.. okay…. Did you come with Fr. Kevin who gave the Homily this morning at the English Mass?” I asked..
Actually no… But I know who Fr. Kevin is. I knew of him before.. He gave a wonderful Homily, didn’t he?”
Yes he did.. He was right down there at the World Trade Center on September 11th.. Were you in New York City on September 11th, 2001?” I asked..
”Yeah. I was John. I was just a few blocks away.” Rita answered..
Oh wow! That must have been very frightening!”
”Well, yes it was.. I spent the day on my knees crying and praying and pleading with God to take care of my husband.” Rita explained.
”Was your husband in the World Trade Center if you don’t mind me asking?”
”Yes, he’s a fireman.. Rita answered. I could see her eyes becoming a bit teary.. “He was one of the first to respond”

Suddenly my questions stopped. Here I am standing next to this poor soul whose husband risked his life to save so many other lives and I wasn’t sure if she was now a widow or not… And that was a question I couldn’t ask. So I froze right there in mid conversation unsure of how to proceed. A few awkward moments of silence went by and then Rita spoke up.
”It’s okay John.. He’s alive.” She said, reassuring me that it was okay to talk about it. She continued, ”Maybe you remember a documentary that came out shortly after 911 about rookie firefighters?”
“Oh yes!” I interrupted. “It was narrated by Robert DeNiro.. Am I right? Is that the one?”
”Yes.. That’s the one.” She confirmed. “Wow, okay, you’ve seen it then.”
”I have it on tape back home. I’ve watched it a few times. It was put together by two journalist’s from France who wanted to make a documentary on rookie firefighters and were stationed….” I began.
”Yes, they were with a fire station just a few blocks from the World Trade center filming a rookie on that day.” Rita interrupted… She continued, ”Well, then you may recall the opening scene where there were a group of firemen standing around an opening investigating..…”
Yes, they were investigating a gas leak, right?” I interrupted..
”Yes they were” She replied. ”And as they were standing there, suddenly you heard a loud roar of jet engines and the cameraman looked up to see the shadow of the first plane glide over the buildings behind them as it headed straight into the first tower.. Well, my husband was one of the men standing there.. His name is Peter Hayden.”
